I thought I should throw a post up here, just to let everyone know that I am doing just fine. I finished chemo and radiation, and last Friday I had my port taken out. The doctors say everything is gone.

I haven't been updating here because I was busy with medical stuff, a new job, and, most important of all-- RAVELRY!!! That's right, I got my invite this summer, after being on the waiting list for a month. I highly recommend it if you knit or crochet. It's too cool.

Anyway, I have tons of pictures to put up. I haven't been knitting too much this summer, but I did get a few things done. Maybe tonight or tomorrow.

I haven't posted for a while, mostly because of this-
Yup, that is my laptop!! One day, it was just done done done. So we took it apart!!
We weren't able to fix it, but we did save the hard drive. And I am saying "we" because I helped!! So, we got another laptop off of Ebay and all is good.

In some other good news, I had my mid-point CT scan last week and the results were very good. The lymph node in my chest is less than half the original size!! I have completed 5 chemo sessions and have 3 left!

I have also done some knitting-
So anyway, I'm back!!

and we made more banana bread!!! Doesn't it look pretty? I tried a different recipe this time, and even though it is good, it isn't quite what I wanted it to be. Still kind of cakey. I would like for it to be more dense. Anyone have a good recipe for banana bread?

I also have lots of new yarn. I've allowed myself to spend a little more on yarn than usual, but given the circumstances, I think that's okay! This is all cotton, except for the red, which is silk. The cotton yarn is stretchy and it will make some nice hats to cover my head when I finally lose my hair. I am losing it now, but I started off with pretty thick hair, so it is hard to tell.
This is all Rowan Handknit Cotton. I got it on sale from Knit Happens. This is all destined to become baby stuff, since lots of people I know are having babies.

This is a hat I have started with some Cascade Fixation in dark and light blue. I got the pattern here.

Here is my prototype hat. I made it with some leftover yarn. Not the Cascade Fixation, but something similar.

Everything is going well with my chemo. Instead of 12 treatments, the doctor said I will only do 8, and then radiation. I didn't have many side effects this time, just itchy hands and feet for a few days, but no mouth or jaw pain, so I'll take it!!

Well, first off, let me apologize for not posting for so long. There are so many people out there who read my blog and comment voraciously-- oh, wait... that is someone else's blog. I got a whole lot of NOTHING on my comments. I know it wasn't working before, but I think it is now. So feel free to commence with the comments.

And on to some other news. First off, before I actually tell you what is going on, I will be just fine in a few months, I am sure of it. How can I be sure??? Because of this--
This single hibiscus flower bloomed on my grandfather's birthday last week. He died almost 30 years ago, and on the first birthday after he died, the same thing happened. It's like he's saying everything will be okay.

So anyway-- I have Hodgkin's Lymphoma, or Hodgkin's Disease, whatever you want to call it. This is the best kind of cancer to have, highly treatable, etc., and I began chemotherapy today. So far, I feel pretty good. I have a total of 12 treatments, once every two weeks. I was scared at first, and I'm sure I'll continue to have my moments, but now I feel like it's something I just have to take care of. Kind of like weaving in your ends and finishing when you are done with your knitting. No one likes to do that, but if you want the perfect finished product, you have to do it. I hate to admit it, but the part I was most afraid of was losing my hair. I don't consider myself to be overly vain, but I think it upset me because you can't hide it. Everyone would know. But now I'm not so scared because I got a wig. An awesome wig. It looks much better than my own hair!!! And none of the pesky upkeep!!! So, this is a banner day here on my blog, because I am going to post the first picture of myself, trying on the wig... That's me! Pardon the gross bandage on my neck. That is from a lymph node biopsy last week and I can't take it off until Monday. However, I think the hair looks pretty darn good.

I wanted to write about it on here. I have no idea who looks at this, but I still wanted to share my story. So I will continue to update as I go along. And I will always end my entry on a positive note, so here it is: People are calling me all the time, and I love it. Even when we just gab about whatever. You just never realize how many people you have that love you, and it makes you feel so fabulous. People are amazing in the strength they can give. Everyone at the hospital is wonderful. My friends rock. My family is awesome. My husband-- well there aren't even words in the English language to describe how utterly amazing he is. That's my happy note: I love my people.

I did a little baking this weekend. We had some quickly ripening bananas, so I thought I would try to make some banana bread. I looked on the internet for a recipe with ingredients I actually had. Let me tell you, there are 5 million different banana bread recipes and all take different ingredients. I did choose one, but it wasn't that good. If anyone has a good recipe, let me know! I did have some help with the baking, though. Meet Mashy--
He was a great help with mashing the bananas. Up until now, we had only used Mashy to help with egg salad, so I think this new duty makes him feel more important. But Mashy isn't alone... Meet his best friend Whisky. Or is it Wisky? Whatever.

We got Mashy and Whisky as wedding presents. Yes, we actually registered for them! It was kind of as a joke, but they have been one of the more useful wedding gifts we got. Oh, and notice the backyard up there?? Here it was less than 5 hours later--

And finally, something knit-related--

Before the snow flew, I made it to the yarn store, Knitted Together. I love that place. I think I could live there. The pink yarn on the left is some ArtYarns. The other two are both Mountain Colors Handpainted. The orange one is called Goldrush, and the green is Mountain Tango. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them, but for now, they are just pretty to look at!

This is the knitting "stuff" I got for Christmas this year, all from my husband. Isn't he the best?? I have been using the first Stitchionary to make swatches from leftover bits of yarn. The plan is to make enough to put them together and make a "patchwork" blanket. I'm sure that will take me a long time! So far, I have made three!!
Only a few hundred or so to go!! No problem!
Using the swift and winder helped me to see how much yarn I really had. Previously I had kept the yarn in bins, tubs, and drawers, and I would forget what I had. Now my yarn is all out in the open on shelves.
I think I have been using more of my yarn, since it's right in front of me. I also haven't bought any yarn since Christmas!! Now that I think about it, I've been so good-- I should go treat myself to some new yarn!!!

Happy Valentine's Day!!! I know, it's a consumer driven holiday, but whatever. I made my hubby some cookies, and I took pictures to prove that I actually made them myself.I had to go buy a rolling pin, and then I injured myself with it. I had a little trouble getting the dough to roll out and I smashed both thumbs and now they are bruised.
Ooooh, stackable cooling racks!!! Yup, I had to buy those too! What was meant to be an inexpensive yet thoughtful gift becomes an expensive trip to the store...
Then I had to melt chocolate, which was a fiasco itself, and dip half the cookie. Who cares if it tastes good, it's pretty!!

Jury duty, day one...

Well, I had to report to jury duty today. It was interesting, to say the least!! I did get called to a panel, and had to stay until about 4:30, but I didn't get assigned to that jury. I didn't have to answer any questions, I just had to sit and listen to the judge and lawyers ask the first 16 jurors questions. It was interesting to be able to sit and observe the process! Anyway, I get to go back to work with my kiddos tomorrow, but I may have to go back for a different jury on Wednesday. I did get plenty of time to work on this sock:

Pattern: Campfire Socks from Cider Moon
Yarn: Regia Stretch, not sure what color, but shades of browns and blues
Needles: US 0, DPNs
This is a great pattern! It's easy to memorize and I love how it seems to prevent lots of the color pooling. I also like the yarn. Maybe I can get called back for more jury duty and get some more time to work on it!

Also, I know a few of you are going to feel the need to make a comment about previous socks, unfinished pairs, unfinished octopus tentacles, why start a new sock when you have others to finish... whatever. But I don't want to hear it!!! It's my knitting, I'll do what I want. However, I will not make a bobble-licious sweater for my mother. More on that later. :)

I've been interested in trying some color work lately, and it seemed like everyone else was too, so I decided to give it a try. First, I made one of the Endpaper Mitts.
I used some Knitpicks Palette I already had. It was really fun to knit, but I'm not really into the color combination and my side seams look terrible, so I don't think I'll be making the matching set.

Then I wanted to make a hat for my uncle, so I thought I would try the Center Square hat that everyone else is also making.
Even with the bad picture (the green is more sagey, not teal), I think this looks pretty cool! Unfortunately, my gauge was off--- WAY off-- and this hat will not fit on any reasonably sized adult head. It's tiny. And with the stranding, there isn't much stretch to it, so I am going to rip it out and try a different hat.

Oh well!!

The husband got me a swift and winder for Christmas!! Some of you may be thinking, "What is a swift and winder?" Here, let me show you a picture!So, now I have become just a little bit obsessive about winding all my yarn. On one hand, it's a good thing-- I have pulled all my yarn out of the various hiding places and found some that I had forgotten about! On the other hand, I am seeing how much yarn I have and wondering if I need to find some sort of support group-- is there a Fiber Addicts Anonymous? I have a few pictures of all the yarn, but I'll post that another day.

I finally felted the Ballet Slippers from Felted Knits. I think they are very cute and I will be making more. It's a fast pattern- the largest size only took about 2 evenings of knitting while watching tv. Here is what I made for my mom. I saw the magnetic spice rack at Pesky Apostrophe, and wanted to make it myself. Here it is on Mom's fridge!!And a close up:Very cool!!! Well, I need to get back to winding more yarn! See you later!

I've been doing all gift knitting, so I can't show most of what I've been working on. I will show this, though--
It's an unfelted Felted Ballet Slipper from Felted Knits by Beverly Galeskas. I saw them over on Jen's Blog-- No Fear Knitting-- here and here, in particular. When I first saw them, I knew I wanted to try to make some, so I ran off to Knitted Together to see if they had the book, which they did. They also had one of the pair's of slippers that Jen had made on display, so I got to see them in person!!! Anyway, this one slipper was pretty fast to make. I got most of it done in one night and now I am working on the second one. These will be a gift for someone, but I don't think she reads the blog, so I should be safe.

I got a great deal on some brand new pink Puma's. I love them soooooo much!!! Look at them....
Complete with a festive background!!! They look a little washed out from the flash, but they are a pale pink. I can't wait to build outfits around the shoes! That's when you know you love your shoes.

And the best part? Here is the pricetag from the shoes...

Did I pay that much? NO!!! $24.99!!!!!! I LOVE EBAY!!!! Oh, man... I'm so giddy about them, I'm getting lightheaded... I better go put my feet up and look at them some more.

In other words, there was a big yarn sale yesterday at The Village Knit Wit. Everything in the store was on sale. I couldn't believe how many people were there-- you could hardle move around. So here's what I got!

It's all for Christmas gifts, mostly mittens or gloves. The Noro is for another stripe scarf. And I think there will be a pair of socks in there, too.

Orange Fetching is finito! I used Cascade 220 Heathers, but I can't recall what color it is exactly. It has some orange, red, and even pink in it. I added an extra pattern repeat at the fingers and didn't do the picot bind off. Love 'em. They will probably be a gift. And thanks to the hubbo for being such a fantastic hand model!!

Because I am on FIRE!!!!!! While Shane was watching the Ultimate Fighting Championship, I started and finished a Super Mitten from Weekend Knitting.
I used Lion Brand Landscapes in Autumn Trails. One skein equals one mitten. The pattern is very easy to follow and quick. This one mitten took a little over an hour. It's a bit big, but very warm. I will try to finish the other one tonight, but my hands are getting tired!

In other knit-related news, someone has stolen my hobo mitts!!!
I guess I'll have to make Shane his own pair so he can pretend he is an Ultimate Fighter.

The picture is kind of dark, but these are Fetching from Knitty. Shane thinks they look hobo-like. Or possibly something to protect the hands while training for my next boxing match. I started them yesterday afternoon and finished them this morning. The yarn is KnitPicks Merino Style in Fog. Yeah, grey. Eh. I have had this yarn forever but never used it. It took less than one skein. I would make these again, but in a better color. I would also add a few pattern repeats to make them a little longer.

I know who you are. Sorry, I haven't posted for a while. I don't really have any reason, except for the Cardinals were playing and I had to watch them with no interruptions. However, I did finish this...

The Trellis baby sweater was knit almost entirely during the Cardinal's post-season games. Yes, my knitting gives them power! The Cardinal's should hire me to sit in the dugout and knit during their games, don't you think? Anyway, I used Mission Falls superwash wool that I bought from my local yarn store. It took just over 4 skeins. It was a quick and easy knit, except I realized I need to work on my finishing, expecially the seaming.
So, now I need a new project...... any suggestions?

This is the beginning of Trellis, a cabled baby sweater. I just started it, so it seems to go pretty quickly. I'm using Mission Falls 1824 Wool in Oatmeal, which is superwash, so it is machine washable and dryable.

Hopefully this has enough going on to keep my interest so I can finish it quickly. Lots of others have made this--Elliphantom has one in light blue, Hooney made one in purple, and Stitchmarker has some action shots!

Now I will have to look for some cool buttons....

Back from The Sunshine State...

We are back from Florida! We had a good time, and I didn't get too sunburned. We took quite a few photos, so I'll just show a few for now...

This is the view from where we were staying in Ft. Lauderdale. It is some sort of timeshare that my brother and sister-in-law are trying out and invited us to come.

One of the highlights of the trip was Butterfly World! Of course, there were butterflies...

but there were also birds...

and fish to feed while crossing a very wobbly bridge. Some people like to make the bridge even more wobbly and unsteady. Thanks Shane...

There was also a building with live insects, but I guess I didn't take any pictures. I was too distracted with the heebie-jeebies. The insects were very large.

I am done with my Noro scarf...

I used 4 skeins of Noro Kureyon in 4 different colors, size 7 needles, 2 by 2 rib, alternating skeins every 2 rows. I think I cast on 64 stitches.

Scarves, Socks, and Hawks

Other people are really good at coming up with witty titles and quotes for their entries. I do not seem to possess that talent, so...... whatever.

I've been working on the Noro scarf. It's about 3 feet long now and will probably be about 5 feet long before it's done! I think it is very nice and I will most likely make another one after this. Especially since I found some Noro on sale here.

I also joined Socktoberfest (along with 422 other knitters at this point). I guess I'm not the only one who needs a reason to use up some sock yarn.

In non-knit related news, I went to the Iowa-Iowa State game yesterday with Hanna. We didn't have tickets, but got some right before the game started. They were primo seats-- the second to last row!! Actually, there were pretty good seats. We could see everything. They were just hard for us to find. We walked almost the entire way around the stadium to find our section, then walked up what felt like 5 bajillion steps. Anyway, the Hawkeyes won, it was a fun time, and afterwards I was worn out. Apparently, Ruby felt the same way..

I love Noro. It's colors are so bright.
So I'm using these in alternating stripes to make a scarf.

You can see other examples here, here, and here. Also, this proves to Hanna that I do use the yarn holder thingie she gave me for graduation!! It shouldn't take too long to complete this scarf, since the first 6 inches only took less than 20 minutes!

I know I haven't shown a picture of the husband and Ruby lately, so here is a good one.
I've never seen a dog so happy to see someone. She jumps up in his lap like some 65 pound lap dog.

I am too busy..... no knitting, no crafting, no pictures of Shane...... I did manage to knit a row or two on my sock during my lunch break, but then one of the needles broke. I will be back on track soon for my loyal fans..... all 3 of them!!!

I went to get the mail today and was greeted with a mailbox that smelled so good! Why, you might ask, does your mailbox smell good? Does it always smell good? Well, normally the mailbox is void of odor, but today's festivities were due to this:
Sorry about the bad picture, but I wanted to post this. I ordered some soap and lotion from Mississippi Moon. Pictured here is the Lavender lotion stick, Stress Relief soap, and an exfoliating bar thrown in as a bonus! I also got the Almond Oatmeal soap, but I put that to use right away because it smells unbelievable!!! Oh, and an unscented lotion stick, but that is already in my purse. I love all of it. The handmade soap will hopefully work better for my skin and the lotion sticks are perfect for my heels and elbows. I'll keep you posted on how it is working for me, but as of right now, I think you should all go order some!!!

The more I get into knitting, the more cool things I find. Like this yarn made from corn, bags made with the knitter in mind (I particularly LOVE this messenger bag), and even programs to put on your PDA to download and keep track of your patterns!

I also found this, a special container with a hole in the top that the yarn feeds through. A year ago, I would have wondered, "Why? Who needs this? They must be nuts..." and now I think, "Hey, I need that....". As I start to be more picky about what yarn I am using, I want to be more protective of that yarn. I don't want it bouncing on the floor, picking up pet hair or whatever else might be under my chair. However, spending between $7-$10 wasn't something I wanted to do- heck, I could use that money to increase my yarn stash!!! So I came up with this, which I am sure other knitters have already done, but I still wanted to share....

I just took those disposable food storage containers, which are about $4 for a set of 4. These are great because the lids are easy to cut, and you can get them in a variety of shapes and sizes for different projects. This way, I get to protect my yarn, while saving money for more yarn!! It's a win-win situation!!!

In other news, my wonderful husband built me a special laptop desk, but I'm not allowed to show it yet. I think he wants to patent it, and it really is quite genius, if you ask me. So I can't show pictures just yet, but, trust me, it will be worth the wait. When it goes into production and we start to make millions, you will all get a discount when you buy your own!!!

Cats, husband, and a rant....

Zoey and Kitty are indoor cats. Therefore, they do not understand the +100 degree weather, because in their world it's always nice and cool. But being cats, they look for warmth in the form of a sunny patch on the floor, laundry fresh from the dryer, or a lap straight from blazing hot heat of the back yard. I had been outside for about 20 minutes and that was enough, so I went inside, sat down, inadvertently set off the cat's heat radar, and they were in my lap within 2 minutes. It must have been the really good kind of heat, because they decided they could share it, which is not something these cats do very well.

This was my view...... I don't think they liked being photographed.......
But they quickly turned their anger on each other. I was able to take one last picture before I had to put the camera down because the paws started flying!!!
So, the cats were mad, but this is a happy husband (but I don't think he likes being photographed either).
Why is he so happy? Because of visible computer guts......
For some reason, he loves tearing apart computers and making them into new ones. And they work! I don't get it. I think that looks scary, but to each his own. I still don't think it compares to knitting, though.

I also seem to be putting lots of pictures of Shane on here. You know why? Because I can. It's my blog and it seems that NO ONE IS READING IT so who cares what I post!!!!!!!!!!!! I sent this to my family and friends.... would it kill you to comment once in a while??? Not every time, just a check-in to let me know you are there..... I know you people are tech-savvy enough to figure it out, except for my father, who did get a step-by-step tutorial, but has he commented???? NOOOOOOO!!!! My brothers??? NOOOOOOO!!!!! My friend in Michigan (I won't list names... yet) NOOOOO!!!!! I better start seeing a few comments from you stragglers, or I will start to post links to the weird stuff. And you will have to look... it's human nature. Just ask J. She has seen some of the weird links. She doesn't want to see them again.

Maybe if I go public with my unfinished projects, I might be shamed into finishing them. Here goes...

Here is a two-legged octopus. So actually, it isn't at all an octopus, but some sort of bi-ped creature. Only one leg is stuffed and neither one is attached, so really, it's just a stuffed hat. The pattern is from The World of Knitted Creatures by Kath Dalmeny. I also have a no-legged bear around here somewhere........

This is the Petal Bib from One Skein. I lost interest, and it doesn't seem to be turning out right.

Ah, unfinished sock number one! This was the first time I fell ill with Second Sock Syndrome.

Unfinished sock number two!!! This is my Jaywalker sock, and I love it, but I'm just not ready to commit to the second one. I used Trekking 100 with size 0 needles, so it was like knitting with toothpicks. I'm sure I'll start to work on these again soon, because I would like to have them for winter.

This is a sock-in-progress using Memories sock yarn in Geranium from KnitPicks. Second Sock Syndrome isn't even the problem here.... I can't even get the first one done!!! I think it's because I have a feeling that this yarn might not hold up. I haven't worn socks made from this yet, so I could be wrong. Maybe they could be a gift for someone who isn't so rough on socks.

For Pete's sake.... I have a few more UFOs, but I'm not even going to post them. In addition to those, I have the Glee sweater I'm working on and the Traveling Vines scarf isn't done yet either. In total, I think I have 9 incomplete projects. Hmm.... is my art imitating my life? Or is my life imitating my art???

It's a new pattern from ZephyrStyle, called Glee. I think it's cute, but I might make it with long sleeves... depends on the yarn situation when I get to that point. I'm using a yarn called Arcadia in Aqua and it's a cotton/angora mix. I am determined to finish this sweater. If I don't, it will only add to the grief I get from some people (you know who you are) about my unfinished objects. Maybe for my next post, I will show all of my unfinished objects, and the public shame and humiliation will make me finish some of them. Maybe. Or maybe not.

I left the house this morning for about an hour and a half, at the most. I came home to find this on my bed...... maybe the perpetrator didn't finish because they wanted milk to go with it.

We had some pretty strong storms on Thursday night, which brought down some larger branches from the tree in the front yard. Wow, that one branch looks like a pretty formidable Ankeny tree!!

I think we could use this extra wood to make some baseball bats to send to my fantasy league players. Even though I am currently in 4th (last) place, if you look at the last 7 or 15 days, I am in first place and closing the gap! I'll be sure to update everyone as I overtake the Anderson League, one male at a time!!!

Here is the Baby Kimono from Mason Dixon Knitting. I think I made it on size 7 needles, with some Baby Bee yarn from Hobby Lobby. I can't remember the color name, but it pinkish-purply. It's not quite finished-- it still needs some ribbons on the side to keep it closed.

The sweater will not fit Shane.

Hello everyone!! It seems like everyone has one of these blog thingies, so I figured I would give it a try. As some of you may have guessed, a recurring theme will probably be YARN and related yarn items, but we will just see what happens!

And there is Ruby, showing off her fishing skills. Don't worry, there won't be anything about fishing on here. I'll leave that to the husband. I just wanted to see how easy it is to post a picture!
